Mathematics is a compulsory part of the IB, and is offered at Standard Level. An alternative option, 'Mathematical Studies', is available for those who do not wish to carry on with Mathematics in their future career. Both options contain a large proportion of pure mathematics and statistics.

Mathematics is a demanding and challenging subject but it can be most rewarding. It improves problem solving abilities and often provides plenty of intellectual stimulation. The aim of the courses is to enable students to appreciate the elegance, power and usefulness of mathematics and to develop logical, creative and critical thinking.

The opportunity is available for students to become involved in various mathematical challenges against youngsters from other UK schools or even students from other countries.

Mathematics underpins many other subjects and provides a useful basis for those wishing to follow university courses in the medical and veterinary sciences, technology, engineering, computing, economics, architecture and finance.
