Music is offered as a part of the IB curriculum. At standard level, students can choose between performing and composing. At higher level they must pursue both.

The Higher Level is designed for the specialist music student with a background in musical performance and composition, who may pursue music at university or conservatoir level. At Standard Level, music is designed for the student who has a background in musical performance.

All students make an in-depth study of a huge range of different styles and genres of music. The final listening exam requires analysis of previously unheard pieces and much of the course is spent equipping the students with the right vocabulary and listening skills to be able to do this. Naturally, the course favours keen and independent learners who are motivated by a strong desire to learn about how music works.

Students also undertake a Musical Investigation in which they choose two examples of pieces from completely different cultures and compare the musical links between them.
