Psychology

This course is designed for study at Standard or Higher Level. Psychology is the study of human behaviour and experience. This course will help you gain an increased understanding of the nature of human beings, both as individual people and as members of social groups.

The aims of the Psychology course for SL and HL students are:

  • An awareness of psychological research and its applications.
  • Ensuring ethical practices.
  • Understanding of the Biological, Cognitive and Socio cultural influences on human behaviour.
  • An appreciation for alternative explanations of behaviour.
  • Understand diverse methods of research. (Qualitative and Quantitative)

Psychology is the ‘scientific study of human behaviour’. Psychology is a very new subject (about 120 years old as an academic discipline) and is therefore still in its infancy when compared to other subjects such as chemistry or philosophy. The IB have taken a very broad ranging subject and placed a paradigm (a way of looking) on top of it. The basic premise involves looking at differing perspectives on the human condition.

How is the course structured?

  • IB 1st year is essentially the 3 different levels of analyses.
  • IB 2nd year is more specialized and focuses on the 2 Options. HL will study 2 options and SL will study 1.
  • IB 2nd year (HL only) will also see students study qualitative designs for undertaking Psychological research
