Economics looks at how resources that are limited can be allocated in the most efficient way. Economics covers a wide range of topics ranging from monopolies to global currency markets.
It is one of the most interesting subjects in that combines theory that is intertwined with real life markets and events. Indeed, the proliferation of economic news on TV, newspapers and other media has made this one of the most important areas in today’s world. Most people either consciously or unconsciously have a vested interest in the economics and this highlights the importance of Economics as a subject.
The study of Economics provides the opportunity to understand how different markets work while answering some of the most important questions about why some things are cheap while others are expensive. Economics is an analytical subject and allows students to become discerning and logical in their thinking. It gives them the ability to pursue independent research in a meaningful way and make reasoned judgements.
All Box Hill School pupils from year 12 have the option to study Economics at the IB Diploma level. Economics is indeed a crucial part of the IB Diploma and is popular amongst students at both the standard and higher levels.
At Box Hill, we encourage students to become inquisitive in all aspects of the subject. This is done through a variety of methods which also includes guest speakers and trips to economic conferences and the Bank of England.
Some of the key areas that Economics looks at include the following:
What is supply and demand?
What are recessions, and why are they important to manage?
What role the government can play in the smooth running of the economy?
Why some countries are rich while others are poor?
