Mathematics can be both frustrating and satisfying. It can be resented or enjoyed. It can be complex or trivial. However, it can neither be ignored nor avoided as it is all around us and underpins many subject areas.
The study of Mathematics provides the opportunity to consider problems and establish routes that may assist in the solution of these problems. It promotes logical and reasoned thinking and requires an ability to communicate clearly and coherently, verbally or on paper.
At Box Hill School the study of Mathematics is compulsory throughout.
In the early years (Years 7-9) the basic skills in number, algebra, shape and space and data handling are established. This provides the basis for the GCSE years.
During years 10 and 11 the IGCSE London Edexcel syllabus (number 4400) is followed.
In the Sixth Form, IB Mathematics is offered at Higher and Standard Level. Both contain a large proportion of pure mathematics and statistics.
During all years there is the opportunity for students to become involved in the various mathematical challenges where students are able to compete against youngsters from other UK schools or even students from other countries.
